Five Years
Staff Synchronicity
Well, for the first part of this planned series of five articles (to match up with our fifth anniversary), we figured we’d talk about the staff that is/was involved with Stillnoname. We’ll venture back to the beginnings of the site, back when it was actually two separate sites, Maximumrandomosity.com and MAGC.NET.
Now, to subtly reword the About page, when the two sites were first online, both Matt and Ender had their own sites. Matt’s was up slightly earlier, due to the fact that it actually spawned from a project required for him to complete the oh-so-useful education from DeVry. After the project was over and graded, he had a homepage with nothing to do, and decided he’d get back into web-coding. What was to follow will be discussed in other articles, but we’ll start out by talking about Matt.
The Twin Sites
It’s funny, but Matt’s the only one here who can actually claim to have met each of our contributors (Ender, Brett, Doogie, Jhon, and von Clegg) before they joined the site. Matt knew Doogie, von Clegg, Brett, and Ender from university; although the latter (wisely?) dropped out, while the previous three went on to continue their DeVry educations. With the exceptions of Doogie and Ender, all of the others were actually roommates of Matt at one time or another, with Jhon being the only one he didn’t know from school. You can see most of Matt’s work in the marvellous pages of code that made up the first couple of versions of the site, as well as commanding the lion’s share of reviews in the reviews section. The scripting of the comics also fell mostly to him as the time went on, culminating in Matt’s writing for the current incarnation of Maximum Randomosity. Despite bouts of inactivity, he’s still around, and short of those not around anymore, does the least work.
Maximumrandomosity.com was Ender’s brainchild. Seeing that the Magc.net and Maximumrandomosity.com were up, with each having sparse content on them, Ender approached Matt with the idea of a webcomic. Matt foolishly agreed. While Matt struggled to maintain Magc.net by himself, Ender once again demonstrated his intelligence by getting a minion to help him with content for his site. This is how Doogie fits into the whole scheme of things -- more on him later. Right now, you can see a lot of Ender in the site. It’s become his baby, having recoded it from scratch in some way that Matt will never truly understand. He’s done the layout, the colors, everything. Everything except content... we jest of course. Ender’s work in the form of content can be predominantly seen in the artwork of the comics, with a healthy smattering of reviews, articles, and hockey posts.
Doogie, who came into the foray on Maximumrandomosity.com, came bearing gifts of articles, reviews, and newsposts. As the sites merged and grew, his love for classic rock started to show through in the vast quantity of music reviews he penned. He’s also been/was active in the movies section of the site, sprinkling his opinion around. After a period of inactivity, (of which we’ve all gone through at some point), Doogie came back to the site with a vengeance, so much so that we had to create a new subsection of the site, SNN Sports, just to house his detailed, blog-worthy, Edmonton Journal worthy, posts about the good ol’hockey game. After filling the articles section with hockey musings, Doogie continues to post almost daily about the greatest game ever played (no, not golf), while occasionally taking the time to give us our opinions in the articles and reviews sections of the site.
Stillnoname.com
Despite Matt’s efforts to get his university and post-university roommate Brett to post on MAGC.NET, he failed horribly. Brett’s first posts came on the newly christened Stillnoname.com. Alas, it was not to last, and for reasons private to all involved, Brett parted ways with the site. If you remember back that far, Brett’s work could be seen in the reviews sections of the site, as well as his help in developing the earlier comics with Matt (around the time of the Iceland storyline).
The next victim to enter the site was Matt’s roommate and 7-Eleven co-worker, Jhon. Jhon is an amazing music buff who all but outpaced Doogie in the music section, as well as singlehandedly created a Concert Scene here in the articles pages. Despite some issues with speeling, Jhon outlasted all of our other victims (minus Doogie, of course) for length of time for the site. While there would be times that he would disappear from the site for awhile, he would always come back bearing gifts of content for everyone involved. Unfortunately, the last time Jhon disappeared into the ethereal stillness of the music created by… some… music guy… or something. He didn’t return. While we’d welcome him back to the site with open arms, we also understand that it just may not be the right thing for him. While currently inactive, you can see his work in virtually all aspects of the reviews, and like we mentioned above, in the Concert Scene section. If he comes back, it won’t take long for you to notice.
Finally, we have Clegg, or von Clegg. Clegg is another one of Matt’s roommates who was convinced to join the site after complaining about how boring his job could get out in the field. Matt figured hey, why not use up that satellite connection to create simple text files and reviews that can be enjoyed by all? It would give von Clegg something to do, and it would give the site some content, which it was sorely lacking at the time. We got less than thirty pieces of content out of him. There was a retaliatory “Canucks Rule!” article in response to Doogie, as well as a bunch of reviews. The job, however, proved to be too demanding, although we’ve never quite figured out which job – the site, or the field. He’s still Matt’s roommate, soon to be his landlord, and if he ever decides to grace us with content again, Ender will set that up quickly.
Well, there you have it, all the members of the site, past and present, and a brief bit about them all. Tomorrow, we’ll talk about the inner workings of the site, so stay tuned.
