The Bottom Line

Annoying characters and a heavy-handed extended storyline made this season much less than it could have been. It's barely tolerable.

Fifth Out Of Five

As we all now know from my review of season three, I'm not a big fan of this season. Now, in watching for the second time to prepare for this review, I will admit that it's not as bad the second time through, however, in my opinion, it still ranks in at the worst season (however, that still beats the pants of other series).

Now, the first bit of the season is actually really good, because the Connor/Beast/Cordelia storyline is not the main focus of the story. However, around episode seven, the epidsodes begin to focus more on this very long story arc and less on the episodic nature of the previous seasons that made them such a joy to watch.

That is not to say that the episodes which follow are not without their highlights, because one of my favorite characters in the series makes a return, Angelus, and, to top it off, Faith comes back as well. I'd be willing to bet that part of the reason that the networks dropped Angel was that I'm not the only one who didn't like this story arc, and viewership for the show dropped. However, all was not lost, following in the footsteps of Save Farscape, the fans of Angel got the show another season with the WB, albeit at a reduced budget, and the show put out their best season.

Kinda makes you wonder, eh?

Not Its Finest

This season started out OK, and then quickly degraded like the previous one. It is better if you think of the 3rd and 4th seasons as one season, but as a stand-alone season, this was marginally watchable. I'm not sure if it was the acting or the writing, but I just couldn't bury my contempt for Angel, Cordelia, or Connor in this season, and it really hurt the season as a whole. The "every episode is continued" bit didn't help either.

Not all was lost though. Joss Whedon continued his destruction and dismantling of Wesley. I also realized something: I hated every character but Doyle, the second they were introduced. That said, I really grew to like Lorne, Fred, and Wesley, and Gunn became much more three-dimensional here as well.

You can't really miss this season, or the previous one, if only to make the following one more sensical. That said, the main cast fell hard here, and without the supporting cast, I likely wouldn't have watched the fifth season.
